Reaching Chinese American Customers in Los Angeles: Neighborhoods, Platforms, and What Works

Greater Los Angeles has one of the largest Chinese American communities in the country. But it isn't spread evenly across the region. It's concentrated in a handful of areas, and it finds restaurants and services through different channels than most American consumers. If you want Chinese customers, start by understanding both.

Where Chinese Americans live and shop in Greater LA

AreaKey cities and neighborhoodsWho you'll reach
San Gabriel Valley (SGV)Alhambra, Monterey Park, San Gabriel, Rosemead, Temple City, Arcadia, San Marino, El Monte, PasadenaThe densest concentration of Chinese restaurants in LA, and the most competitive

A family in the SGV taking their parents out for Sunday dim sum and a UCLA student looking for a date-night spot are both Chinese customers. They want very different things. Know which one you're trying to reach.

How Chinese Americans find places to eat and shop

  • Xiaohongshu (RedNote): The first stop for restaurant and store recommendations, especially for students and young professionals.
  • WeChat: Word of mouth in group chats and friends' feeds, used more by families and older customers.
  • Google Search and Maps: Where people check your address, hours, and rating after hearing about you.
  • Instagram and TikTok: Used more by Chinese Americans who grew up in the U.S.

Put simply, Xiaohongshu is where people discover you, Google is where they double-check, and WeChat is how they pass you along. Make sure your details match everywhere.

What works by industry

  • Restaurants: Local creator visits, matched to your neighborhood, plus a location tag on every post. For the restaurants we work with, posts average 2,000+ views, Chinese customer traffic has grown more than 5x on average, and return on spend averages over 10x.
  • Grocery stores: Openings, weekly deals, and "what to buy" lists.
  • Dental and eye care practices: Chinese patients choose providers by reputation, so real patient stories and Chinese-language consultations go a long way. IQ Laser Vision's Xiaohongshu content has passed 30 million views, bringing in 1,500+ consultations and 500+ procedures, with Chinese patients now more than half of its total. \[Link: Work page\]
  • Home appliances: Speak to how people actually cook. Chinese home cooking produces a lot of smoke, so range hood performance matters.
  • Salons and beauty: Before-and-after photos do the selling.

Three common mistakes

  1. Treating "the Chinese market" as one audience. Needs vary a lot by neighborhood and age. Match your creators and content to the people you actually want.
  2. English only. Without a Chinese name and some Chinese-language information, customers have a hard time finding and remembering you.
  3. Chasing follower counts. One big creator with followers all over the country often brings in fewer customers than ten local micro-creators.

FAQ

Where do most Chinese Americans in Los Angeles live? The largest concentration is in the San Gabriel Valley, including Alhambra, Monterey Park, San Gabriel, and Arcadia, extending east to Rowland Heights, Hacienda Heights, Walnut, and Diamond Bar. Irvine in Orange County is another major hub.

I'm not Chinese. What should I do first to attract Chinese customers? Pick a Chinese name that's easy to remember, get real posts about your business on Xiaohongshu, and make sure customers can easily find and contact you. Those three steps already put you ahead of most competitors.
